The defending Stanley Cup champions need to take back control of the series after letting a 2-0 series lead slip.

The defending Stanley Cup champions need to be more active in the forecheck and get more from their bottom lines.

The defending Stanley Cup champions need to score on the power play.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals have done all the above through one period and have a 1-0 lead in Game 5.

After one period, this does not look like the same team that was blown away in Game 3 and undone by mental mistakes in Game 4.

And in less than eight minutes of play, the Capitals converted a man-advantage opportunity with Nicklas Backstrom scoring his fourth of these Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Assists came from John Carlson and Tom Wilson, who has been very active in the early goings, as well.

Playing in front of an electric crowd at Capital One Arena, the Capitals have put some of the sluggishness they displayed in Carolina behind them.

And the crowd hit another level after Backstrom's opener.

Forty minutes stand between Washington and a 3-2 series lead and the team that has scored first has won every game of the series thus far.
