Max Scherzer deserves all the praise he receives right now.

Stream MLB games now on fuboTV.

The ace for the Washington Nationals has put up a 2.30 ERA in 19 starts covering 129 1/3 innings. He has struck out only 181 batters and leads the majors with a 2.00 FIP (a stat which eliminates defense's effect on a pitcher's success.)

At the All-Star Game in Cleveland, Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez joined the chorus of those heaping lavish praise upon Scherzer and Dodgers All-Star Clayton Kershaw.

"When you walk in the clubhouse, they look at you like I do," Martinez said on MLB Network. "And I'm a Hall of Famer and all that, but I have so much respect for both of you."

Martinez goes on to call the pair of pitchers "the essence of baseball"

"The two players that everybody wants to be like," he said.

Scherzer was slated to make his first start of the second half of the MLB season Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, but will miss his scheduled day due to back tightness.
