As Bryce Harper enters what could be his final homestand with the Washington Nationals, he has a really good offensive season by almost any measure.

After a batting average low of .209 on June 20, he has raised it to a respectable .247. With nine games left, he should set career highs in RBI (need two to get to 99), walks (needs one to get to 124), plate appearances (needs six to get to 654), at-bats (needs 22 to get to 533) and more.

The only way he will fall short of expectations is because of the legend of Bryce Harper, particularly in what could be a historic contract year.

Even under dire expectations, Harper still performed well. Just ask him.

"I got great numbers," Harper told the media. "People talk, see that, see this. I got great numbers. This is one of my best seasons that I’ve ever had. If I’m hitting .240, .250, of course, that’s not the type of hitter that I want to be, at least in that category.

"But if I was hitting .300 we’d be talking about another MVP. So, I’m not worried about it. I’m going to go into the offseason and have the same offseason I’ve had every single year."

Except that at some point during this offseason, he'll sign a nine-figure contract, somewhere.

No matter how you look at Harper's season, he is not the reason that the team is not going to the playoffs. If he leaves for another city this offseason, the Nationals will not be better through his subtraction. And Harper seems to be at peace with the universe heading into the finals weeks of regular season baseball in 2018.

"Like I’ve always said, there’s a lot of things in life that are bigger than baseball," he said. "After the year is done, it’s over and then I can look back on it and 'Oh, hey, I need to do this or do that.' Next year is a big year and I go to spring training and do what I can and go about it every single day the right way."
