Caps home arena is packed...for an away game

By 8 p.m., the Capital One Arena was mostly full of red-clad fans. But instead of looking down at the floor, they gazed skyward at the giant video screens overhead.

The action that they care about is hundreds of miles away in Tampa, Florida.

Even in an age where teams struggle to get fans in the seats, the Washington Capitals have managed to fill at least the lower bowl of the home arena for a viewing party.

It isn't just quantity of fans either. There is fan energy that sizzles and crackles through the arena, particularly after Alex Ovechkin put them on the board in the opening minutes of the first period:

Clearly, this idea worked. This is one of the biggest games in franchise history and it happens on the road. This is the best way for the Caps to engage with fans one last time, regardless of what happens in the game. 

Most importantly, the viewing party was free. That's a good way to endear your team to fans.
