Nicklas Backstrom gives Caps first blood

The Washington Capitals took most of the first period off on offense, not registering a shot on goal until nearly 10 minutes into the game.

After that first practice shot, which led to a faceoff, the Caps were quick to make good on the opportunity.

Nicklas Backstrom scored the 32nd postseason goal of his career, with assists going to Brooks Orpik and John Carlson:

After bringing the crowd back into the game, Backstrom didn't wait long for an encore.

Just after the 13th minute of the first period, riding a power play, Backstrom lined up wide of the goal and snuck a deflection in for the 2-0 lead:

Both teams came into this series hot, but the Caps have more experience and the home crowd. Especially after struggling to get shots early in the first period, Backstrom's goals gave the Caps confidence and momentum.
