Capitals vs. Blue Jackets

The Washington Capitals were arguably the best team every time they touched the ice against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The only problem is that they won just three of the first five games.

After his team lost Game 5, Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella brashly guaranteed a Game 6 victory and a return to Capital One Arena for Game 7.

That was all the Caps--who love to play overtime games in the playoffs--needed to deliver a decisive knockout punch on Monday night.

Dmitry Orlov got the Caps started in the first period with a fast-break goal:

After letting the Blue Jackets tie the game at one, Alex Ovechkin scored his 50th career postseason goal:

In the final two minutes of the second period, Ovechkin wasted little time finding his 51st postseason goal:

Devante Smith-Pelly used breakawy speed to get past defenders in the third period, putting the Caps up 4-2

At this point, the Caps had all they needed, but they got what they wanted in the form of an insurance goal from Chandler Stevenson:

With the Blue Jackets threatening late, Lars Eller actually delivered the empty-net dagger, pushing the Caps to a 6-3 advantage and ending the threat.

The Caps held on to win Game 6 and will advance to the second round to face the Penguins in the second round.
