Georgetown men's basketball coach Patrick Ewing announced Friday that he's tested positive for COVID-19.

"I want to share that I have tested positive for COVID-19," Ewing, 57, announced on Twitter. "This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly. I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones."

Ewing is using his positive test as an opportunity to urge people to take the virus seriously. Georgetown issued a statement in lock step with its head coach.

"Georgetown University's Head Men's Basketball Coach Patrick Ewing has tested positive for the COVID-19 Virus," the statement reads. "Ewing has elected to share his diagnosis publicly to emphasize that this virus can affect anyone.

"Ewing is under care and isolated at a local hospital. He is the only member of the Georgetown men's basketball program to have tested positive for the virus."
