How can Redskins make the playoffs?

Long shots only seem improbable until they happen.

Well, with two games remaining, the odds of the Redskins making the playoffs are pretty long.

Entering the season's final stanza, the Redskins have an 11 percent chance at the playoffs per FiveThirtyEight, 14.5 percent chance per Football Outsiders, and a 20 percent chance per The New York Times.

So what needs to go down to get the 'Skins into the playoffs?

The simplest place to start is with Washington defeating Tennessee Saturday and beating Philadelphia at FedEx Field in Week 17. Jay Gruden's chargers don't control their own destiny, but a 9-7 record will put the pressure on their NFC rivals.

With those two wins the Redskins can claim the NFC East crown with two Cowboys losses.

Dallas hosts Tampa Bay Sunday before traveling to face an already-eliminated New York Giants team in Week 17. Two easy games, but the Cowboys are coming off a 23-0 embarrassment in Indianapolis.

The Redskins can also earn a wild card spot with a 9-7 record if the Seahawks lose twice or the Vikings lose at least once.

Seattle hosts Kansas City on Sunday night before finishing with a home game against Arizona.

Kirk Cousins and Minnesota travel to Detroit on Sunday before hosting the smoking-hot Chicago Bears.

Now, if the Skins fall to the Titans – FiveThirtyEight gives Washington a 27 percent chance at the upset – a loss on Saturday won't eliminate them as they can still make the playoffs with an 8-8 record if Minnesota loses out and the Eagles lose out. Or two Philadelphia defeats and two Seattle defeats would get the Skins in with an 8-8 record.

Philadelphia hosts the Houston Texans Sunday, with Houston in need of a win to help secure a first round bye.

Regardless of the Skins result Saturday in Nashville, Sunday at 1 p.m. is a crucial time for Washington as they root for the Lions, Texans, and Buccaneers.

Playoffs? It could happen.
