Capitals winger Brendan Leipsic is embroiled in a social media nightmare after screenshots of a private conversation leaked online.

The group conversation shows Leipsic making lewd and offensive remarks about women and ridiculing current and former teammates (screenshots here). Leipsic is also shown calling Capitals linemates Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway "losers."

UPDATE: Capitals Terminate Leipsic's Contract

The Sports Junkies reacted to the news Thursday morning, saying Leipsic can no longer be trusted and should be released by the Capitals immediately.

"I don't know if he'll wind up being released, but I know he's gonna get a talking to from Brian MacLellan," John Auville said. "I know that."

"Well he can't play here. The boys can't trust him," Eric Bickel said. "He's violated all trust. That guy's cancer in the locker room. It's over."

"He should be released today," Jason Bishop said. "He's just an idiot. How stupid can you be?"

"Right now, he's the leader in the clubhouse for the dumbest of 2020. Short of like someone who murders somebody," Bickel said. "As far as I can tell, he's the dumbest guy, certainly locally, of 2020."

"Why would you ever want to play on a line with him again?" said Auville. "He's throwing Nic Dowd and Hathaway completely under the bus, calling them losers."

"Never. You can't even share a plane with him," Bickel said. "It's the biggest no-no to talk (smack) about your teammates publicly. He essentially did it publicly. He did it on a social media chat. How dumb is he? That guy's got an IQ of about 20."

The Capitals say they are aware of the "unacceptable and offensive comments" and will handle the matter internally.

Leipsic has since deactivated his Instagram account and released the following statement: "Yesterday my friend's Instagram account was hacked and an individual circulated images that are representative of private conversations I was a part of. I fully recognize how inappropriate and offensive these comments are and sincerely apologize to everyone for my actions.

"I am committed to learning form this and becoming a better person by taking time to determine how to move forward in an accountable, meaningful way. I am truly sorry."

"I just don't know if he survives it," Auville said.

"He can't. He can't," Bishop said. "I mean you only signed him to a one-year deal. He can't be that good."

"If you're MacLellan and (coach) Todd Reirden, you just look at it and you just wash your hands of it," Auville said. "You say, 'You know what? We can find another fourth-line guy.' Brian MacLellan is good enough at his job that he's gonna find a Brendan Leipsic replacement."

"No, he's gotta be gone," Bishop said.

"I think today," Bickel said. "I'll be shocked if he's not gone today."

"I'll be disappointed if he's not," Bishop said.

The NHL released its own statement, hinting at possible punishment to come.
