The Capitals' Stanley Cup defense ends after 7 games

The Washington Capitals couldn't outlast the upstart Carolina Hurricanes in Game 7 of their first-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series.

Washington's Stanley Cup defense ended in stunning fashion, on a Brock McGinn goal 11:05 into double overtime late Wednesday evening at Capital One Arena.

It was Mr. Game 7 himself, Justin Williams, on the assist, tossing the dagger to be twisted into his former team to end the Caps' hopes of going back to back.

Rod Brind'Amour's Hurricanes advance to face the Barry Trotz-led Islanders in the second round.
