The Capitals and Red Wings have swapped defensemen, with Nick Jensen going to Washington in a trade for Madison Bowey, as first reported by TSN's Darren Dreger.

The Caps also sent a 2020 second-round pick to Detroit, receiving a 2019 fifth-round pick in exchange.

Jensen, 28, has played in 60 games for Detroit in 2018-19, registering 15 points (2 goals, 13 assists), which ties the highest point total of his career. A fifth-round pick by Detroit in 2009, Jensen has 43 points (6 goals, 37 assists) in 190 career games.

"Nick is a reliable modern-day defenseman who we feel can defend well and log valuable minutes for our club," said Capitals GM Brian MacLellan. "At 28 years of age, we feel he is just entering his prime."

The Caps have been active heading into Monday's trade deadline. They also acquired 30-year-old winger Carl Hagelin from the Kings for a 2019 third-round pick, as well as a conditional sixth-round pick in 2020. And on Wednesday, the defending Stanley Cup champions placed Devante Smith-Pelly on waivers, later assigning him to Hershey once he cleared waivers.

Bowey, 23, has registered 6 points (1 goal, 5 assists) in 33 games. He was a second-round selection (53rd overall) by the Caps in 2013.
