Devante Smith-Pelly had by far his best game as a Hershey Bear Sunday, scoring three goals to lead the Capitals' AHL affiliate to a 5-3 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack.

As you'll recall, Smith-Pelly joined the Bears after the Capitals placed him on waivers, but then was not claimed by another NHL team. A fan favorite and a hero of last year's Stanley Cup run, Smith-Pelly struggled this season after re-signing with the Caps on a one-year, $1 million deal, at one point going on a 33-game scoring drought

"He just never got going," Alan May told The Sports Junkies two weeks ago. "I'm not surprised that no one picked him up. There's pro scouts from other teams in the buildings every single night the Caps play. There's always someone else watching. And he didn't make himself available to be picked from any other team."

But if Smith-Pelly can keep playing well in Hershey, could he earn his way back on the Caps roster for the playoffs? General manager Brian MacLellan didn't rule it out.

"I think he didn’t have the best training camp, didn’t start off right,” MacLellan said. “Maybe expectations were that he was going to pick up where he left off in the playoffs and he struggled getting back to that level. Doesn’t mean we can’t bring him back up here at the end.”
