Colt McCoy to miss second Redskins preseason game

UPDATE: Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden confirmed Colt McCoy will sit out his second straight preseason game Thursday, as first reported by Craig Hoffman of 106.7 The Fan.

Gruden declined to provide any detail on how McCoy's absence might affect the quarterback time share in Thursday's game against Cincinnati.

McCoy broke his leg in a Week 13 game against Philadelphia last December and is still recovering from offseason surgery, but he's healthy enough to practice regularly with planned rest days. The stress on his leg was enough to keep him from playing in last week's preseason opener against the Browns.

Here's how 106.7 The Fan's Craig Hoffman characterized McCoy's situation after missing the preseason opener:

"Simply put, McCoy had an awful week. Keenum hasn’t been eye-popping by any means, but McCoy’s lead not only shrank, but it also disappeared. I would go as far as to say he’s in a hole behind Keenum pending Thursday’s game against the Bengals. And some of this is health-related. He clearly doesn't trust his leg and the continued reps seem to have taken a toll. The original plan called for rest every fourth day for McCoy. He wound up taking just one rest day in Richmond outside the scheduled off days."

Outside of his health concerns, McCoy has underperformed in practice, with his decision-making and accuracy leaving more to be desired. Hoffman has more here.

McCoy is quickly falling behind Case Keenum in Washington's open QB competition and is now clearly second on the depth chart, Hoffman says.

The Redskins host the Bengals Thursday night at FedEx Field.
