The Washington Nationals are fighting to keep hold of a Wild Card spot while their manager, Dave Martinez, is fighting for his health, a development that "puts things in perspective," closer Sean Doolittle says.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo provided an update on his skipper's condition prior to Monday's game, telling reporters Martinez, after experiencing chest pains Sunday, got checked out at a local hospital and underwent a "cardiac catheterization" on Monday, a procedure intended to treat cardiovascular conditions.

Rizzo said Martinez was "upbeat" after the procedure, but remained in D.C. as the Nationals traveled to St. Louis to undergo additional precautionary medical testing. Nats bench coach Chip Hale managed the club Monday evening, with Washington falling to the Cardinals 4-2. It's unclear when Martinez will rejoin the club.

"It kind of puts things in perspective a little bit," Doolittle said during his weekly 106.7 The Fan appearance Tuesday, presented by Lindsay Volvo Cars of Alexandria. "We're grinding this playoff push out right now, but obviously that's far more imporant. We're hoping to have him back in the dugout soon."

"I don't have a ton of details. I know Mike Rizzo addressed some of the media yesterday," he said. "He had some more details on some of the stuff that Davey was having done in the hospital. I don't know enough about it to really comment on the specifics of that, but any time you're talking about something with the chest or the heart or something, it's not something you take lightly. It's obviously something that's super serious."

"Obviously we're thinking about him," he said. "It sounds like the news so far has been good, which, that's very positive. There was a strange vibe after the game on Sunday, and we pull out a win, a shutout, but everybody's kind of thinking about Davey and hoping that we're gonna hear some good news, hopefully soon. He's back in D.C. I don't know when he's set to rejoin the team. It's been tough."
