Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice underwent surgery on his right knee Thursday and could miss several weeks.

Guice went to Pensacola, Fla. to visit the renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews to "get a second opinion on his torn meniscus," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. And the Redskins' second-round draft pick from 2018 elected to undergo a "minor procedure" to fix the torn meniscus in the words of Washington head coach Jay Gruden.

"Don't feel bad for me!!" Guice tweeted Thursday. "This what I signed up! It wear and tears on your body over time! I've been doing this 15 years!! Trust the process.. head up chin up and grind."

Gruden said Thursday he was not sure how long the running back would be out. On Friday, the Redskins placed him on Injured Reserve making him eligible to return in eight weeks.

Gruden was optimistic about Guice's prospects for a recovery.

"I don't have a concern with him getting back to full strength," Gruden said. "He came back extremely strong with the much more damaged knee last time. This is a minor procedure from what I've been told and he will be back. Great kid, works extremely hard and eventually, he's going to show (fans) what he's all about."

Guice had an MRI Monday morning on his right knee, which is not the knee he injured during the 2018 preseason. In his NFL regular season debut Sunday, Guice had 10 carries for 18 yards in the Skins' 32-27 loss to the Eagles. He was limited to just 24 snaps in Week 1, representing just 36 percent of the Redskins offensive plays.

Veteran RB Adrian Peterson, who was a controversial healthy scratch vs. the Eagles, will take Guice's place in the starting lineup against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Guice could have surgery as soon as Thursday.

This is not the first time Guice has visited Dr. Andrews, as he performed the surgery which repaired torn ACL in Guice's left knee in August 2018.
