The nagging heel injury that caused Josh Doctson to miss Monday's game in New Orleans may not be 100 percent for the rest of the season.

On Tuesday Jay Gruden said Doctson was close to playing but "chose to sit him last minute," erring on the side of caution rather than risking further injury. Doctson missed practice four straight days after getting kicked in the heel last week.

"He's close to being 100 percent and I don't know if he will ever get to that point with the heel the way it is, but I think he could have gone," Gruden said. "We've got to continue to strengthen that thing and get as close to 100 percent as we can for Carolina."

On Wednesday Gruden was asked what it is about the nature of the injury that could prevent Doctson's heel from being 100 percent for the remainder of the year.

"I don't know if it's anything. It's just a nagging deal," Gruden said. "If you think about a swollen heel or a sore heel, every time you put your shoe on and run, it's going to be a nagging type deal. I don't think it's anything that'll keep him out of the lineup I don't think for the next few weeks. It'll just be something that he's got to get a new shoe, probably, and something to work with and deal with."

Doctson suffered a bruised heel back in August after similarly getting "stepped on." It's unclear whether he is currently suffering from the same heel injury or a new one, but Gruden did say this current injury flared up when Doctson "got kicked in practice." If it's the same injury, the "nagging deal" portion of Gruden's comments this week would explain a lot.

"Yeah, he got kicked in practice," Gruden said Wednesday. "He couldn't get his shoe on until Thursday, I think it was, so he wasn't able to practice Thursday or Friday. And then Saturday, he started feeling a little bit better. Sunday he said he felt pretty good, but he didn't do any practice and I wasn't quite sold, so we kept him out last week."
