Nats announce 60-player pool for 2020 season

While keeping in mind that in 2020 nothing is set in stone, the Washington Nationals have set their 60-player pool for the 60-game 2020 MLB regular season.

The club announced the roster, which includes 36 pitchers, 11 infielders, seven outfielders, and six catches, shortly after MLB's 4 p.m. deadline on Sunday. Because there will not be any minor league games in 2020, the pool is an expanded version of the club's 40-man active roster in normal seasons and includes many of the organization's top prospects, who presumably will be involved in a second spring training and could possibly feature during the shortened season.

If all goes according to plan and the season can continue (which in the age of COVID-19, this is a tremendous if), the Nationals would still have to announce a 40-player active roster and a 30-player Opening Day squad before the season starts on July 23 or 24, possibly in a marquee matchup against the New York Yankees. The Nationals have 38 players currently on their 40-man roster, with the other 22 in the pool being comprised of non-roster players.

The most noteworthy of those non-roster players in the pool is 21-year-old right-hander Jackson Rutledge, the club's 2019 first-round draft pick and Washington's No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline. In 2019 at Hagerstown Class-A, Rutledge made six starts and pitched to a 2.30 ERA over 27 and 1/3 innings.

Ryan Zimmerman was also named to the pool even though the veteran said he still has concerns about playing during the public health crisis. Update: On Monday, Zimmerman and pitcher Joe Ross announced they would opt out of the upcoming season.

Here is the Nationals' complete 60-player pool:

Infielders (11): Asdrubal Cabrera, Starlin Castro, Wilmer Difo, Luis Garcia, Howie Kendrick, Carter Kieboom, Jake Noll, Brandon Snyder, Eric Thames, Trea Turner, and Ryan Zimmerman

Outfielders (7): Emilio Bonifacio, Adam Eaton, Yadiel Hernandez, Victor Robles, Juan Soto, Andrew Stevenson, and Michael A. Taylor

Catchers (6): Tres Barrera, Welington Castillo, Yan Gomes, Raudy Read, Jakson Reetz, and Kurt Suzuki

Pitchers (36, 10 left-handed and 26 right-handed): Fernando Abad, Joan Adon, Dakota Bacus, Aaron Barrett, James Bourque, Ben Braymer, Tim Cate, Patrick Corbin, Matt Cronin, Wil Crowe, Sean Doolittle, Roenis Elias, Tyler Eppler, Paolo Espino, Erick Fedde, Kyle Finnegan, Sam Freeman, Steven Fuentes, Javy Guerra, Ryne Harper, Will Harris, Daniel Hudson, Jake Irvin, Kyle McGowin, Kevin Quackenbush, Tanner Rainey, Seth Romero, Joe Ross, Jackson Rutledge, Anibal Sanchez, Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Wander Suero, Austin Voth, Nick Wells, and Austen Williams.

The Nats also placed infielder Adrian Sanchez on the 60-Day Injured List (torn right Achilles).
