Mike Rizzo says Anthony Rendon "better call his agent" if he hasn't heard from the Nationals front office about a contract extension in the past month.

"Well, he better call his agent! Because we got a counter proposal from his agent on July 15," Rizzo told The Sports Junkies during his weekly appearance, presented by Burke & Herbert Bank. "So he better be in contact with him."

Rendon told 106.7 The Fan's Grant & Danny Tuesday that he and his agent, Scott Boras, have not heard from Washington's front office in some time.

"We haven't heard from the front office in a few weeks or a month now," he said. "And we haven't had an offer, I don't believe, in a little bit longer than that."

Rendon also strongly hinted he intends to test free agency when his contract with the Nationals expires this fall, while also leaving the door open for his club to meet a certain price point and "some contingencies" he says he's made clear to the Nationals.

"We've been in contact with his guy. We've talked to Anthony and his people," Rizzo said. "We're gonna be aggressive in trying to get him done. We want him here. We're going to be very fair and aggressive with him because he's one of our own and we want to keep him.

"But we've been in constant communication. We've had a lot of dialogue with them. We've had proposals back and forth. Like I said, earlier this month, the month of July, we've had proposals back and forth."

Asked if the counter proposal from Boras was something the Nationals feel they can work with, or just an outrageous number, Rizzo replied, "Well, we're not gonna discuss where we're at with that, but it's something that, the dialogue is open and we continue to discuss it. Mr. Lerner and myself and Scott, we're working on it, and so is Mark Lerner, so we're trying to get it done."
