Training camp may still be a few weeks away, but that doesn't mean football players can't get some good work done.

And Redskins defensive lineman Daron Payne is using his downtime to bring smiles to military families.

Payne paid a visit to Fort Eustis in Newport News, Va. Monday to sign autographs and help spread the word on a new mobile dental care facility geared toward military members, retirees, and their families.

"I really didn't think I was doing a good job of reaching out to the community," Payne told reporters. "I just wanted to step it up a little bit, and what better way to do it than with the military?

"I'm very thankful for what they do for me and everybody else."

Payne is looking to step it up on the gridiron, too. The 22-year-old finished with five sacks and 56 total tackles in his rookie season in 2018 but believes he can do even more in Year 2.

"I feel like last season was kind of a roller coaster," Payne told WTKR. "I really just want it to stay on the upside this year. Just try to improve on last year. Take all the good and the bad from last year and just improve on it. Hopefully have a better year."
