Don't be surprised if Dwayne Haskins starts Week 1

The Redskins' selection of Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins generated a lot of buzz within the fanbase.

And according to Eric Edholm, the 15th overall pick has the talent to immediately take over as the No. 1 QB in D.C.

"I think that's very realistic (Haskins starts Week 1)," Edholm told The Sports Junkies Monday. "Is it nice to have Case Keenum on board? Sure, but unless there's some sort of setback or you feel like, ok, there just isn't enough common ground between what he learned at Ohio State and what he's learning here ... I think it's Week 1, I really do."

Haskins will have to beat out veterans Keenum and Colt McCoy for the job, but Edholm believes head coach Jay Gruden may not have the luxury of keeping Haskins on the bench to start the season.

"Would it be nice to be able to start Keenum and then you go, ok, you're 2-3 and the offense is struggling a little bit, now you bring (Haskins) in — obviously you want to avoid a slow start, but would it be nice to have the luxury of doing that?"

"Yeah, but Jay Gruden is already the longest-tenured coach in the Daniel Snyder era," said Edholm. "Gruden's fighting for his job. I think he's gonna put the best player out there."

"When the balls start flying, I really think (Haskins) is gonna be the best quarterback. And Case isn't terrible — I don't want to make it sound like I think he's awful — but I just have a feeling it's gonna be, if not Week 1, very early."

And having watched Haskins a-plenty during his lone season as the Buckeyes' starting QB, Edholm thinks the Maryland native has a chance to be really special.

"You saw a poise and a maturity that you don't see in young quarterbacks very often," Edholm told the Junkies. "I remember thinking: Michigan, Michigan State and Washington — probably three of the best 15 defenses in college football — 10 touchdowns, zero interceptions. To me, that counts for something."

"He just had a great poise against really talented teams."
