Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed may not be able to return to football, league sources have told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Reed, who suffered multiple concussions during his seven-year career, has been ruled out for the Redskins' game Monday night against the Chicago Bears.

According to Schefter, there are those within the Washington organization and people around the NFL who are concerned Reed will not be able to play football again after he sustained another concussion during the Skins third preseason game in Atlanta.

Reed, 29, was able to practice this week and before the Redskins' Week 2 game, but has yet to play this season.

During his time in Washington, Reed has been one of the team's most productive pass-catchers, accounting for 24 touchdowns and 3,371 yards in 65 games. But injuries, including numerous concussions, have hampered his career.

There is no timetable on a possible return for the 2013 third-round pick.
