The Washington Redskins will bounce back and beat the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, but that doesn't mean they'll be more consistent this season, says The Athletic D.C. editor-in-chief David Aldridge.

"They have a terrible game, Jay Gruden says code red or code yellow or whatever it is. They come back and they play well the next week," Aldridge told 106.7 The Fan's Grant & Danny. "They win the game and then they start smelling themselves and they come back and lose the following week. I mean this is what they do, this is what they've done for the last four-and-a-half years."

"They haven't had a winning streak longer than two games in two years," Aldridge said.

The main question: Is head coach Jay Gruden the reason the Redskins are unable to string together wins?

"I think Jay Gruden is a hard-working coach. I think the players respect him, you don't get any sense that they feel like (Gruden) is in over his head, but the bottom line is this is what has happened under his tenure and he's the only guy that has been here for all of his tenure," Aldridge said.

And while Aldridge admits not many expected Washington to go into New Orleans and win, getting blown out and looking inept at times on both sides of the ball has set off many familiar alarm bells.

"It just kinda fits into the pattern that they have established under Jay Gruden which is they just can't seem to handle coming off a win and following that up with another good performance. It is not a character flaw, it is just what's happened," Aldridge said. "I can only go by what's happened and this is what has happened consistently under this coaching staff."

Does that mean Gruden's seat is getting hot?

"You gotta assess if this is a coach that can get this done," Aldridge said. "What else can you do? I mean, you've changed all the players, you've changed the quarterback three times now. At some point you have to look at the coach and see if he is good enough."

"Daniel Snyder's gotta decide if this is the guy." Aldridge said. "How many years do you get to kind of right the ship here?"
