Believe it or not, training camp is almost here. After one of the most consequential Redskins off-seasons of the last two decades, we’ll start to answer the biggest questions we have about the football team.

With ten days to go until Richmond, The Fan started asking our ten biggest questions about the 2019 Washington Redskins. We’re now three days away. Just three stories left, and they’re massive. Let’s dive into number three.

3. Brandon Scherff’s Contract Extension

When Scherff was taken No. 5 overall in 2015, there were a lot of questions, predominantly “who takes a guard at number five?!” The answer, of course, was Scot McCloughan, who wanted to establish a new culture and new way of thinking in his first draft. The message was sent, even if McCloughan’s tenure overall turned into a disaster.

Scherff has been sensational. He’s everything you’d possibly want in an NFL guard outside of being a No. 5 pick. He can’t control that. All he can do is play, and play he has. He’s powerful. He’s smart. He’s exceptional in space. From a mentality standpoint, he’s an ideal offensive lineman. He works his ass off and he wants no part of publicity.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to get paid though. He certainly knows he’s good, and so does his agent. Is he the best guard in football? He’s in the conversation, and in the modern NFL, that’s typically enough to get the highest contract for your position if you’re the next guy up.

However, an initial report from 106.7 The Fan contributor Erin Hawksworth said the contract negotiations haven’t gone well and the Redskins came in low. We don’t have much more information because Scherff isn’t the type to talk to anyone about such things, and the Redskins are notoriously tight-lipped about contract talks. This actually hurt them quite a bit in the Kirk Cousins negotiations where the quarterback’s side drove the narrative for years.

Because of the lack of information, there’s not much more to add here other than this should get done. He’s great. Great players get paid. He’s a model citizen. There are no concerns so long as there’s no fear over his surgically repaired shoulder being problematic. This shouldn’t be hard.

It won’t be a distraction because Scherff won’t talk about it. He’s also a guard. The whole league isn’t watching like they would at another position. That said, signing a foundational player is always a big deal and it wouldn’t surprise me if this deal gets done by early on in training camp.
