An offseason which has seen Chris Russell emerge as one of the top MLB reporters on the beat, Bryce Harper's free agency just got a little bit weirder, if not longer.

Smash Mouth -- yes, SMASH MOUTH -- is now reporting on some internal conflict among top Giants executives about how long an offer to extend to Harper.

"We are hearing," the tweet begins, presumably indicating that all five members of the late-90s rock band were on board with this tweet, "Giants ownership/upper mgmt might not be on the same page as Zaidi regarding Harper.

"They want to offer a long term contract like they did with Bonds and Zaidi does NOT want to. Sabean/Baer step the F up, this is your team, not some slappy's from the Dodgers!"

Smash Mouth is under the impression that front office infighting has left Giants owner/CEO Larry Baer and longtime top executive Brian Sabean in one camp, hoping to make a long-term investment in Harper, just as the club did with Barry Bonds in 1992, and president of baseball ops. Farhan Zaidi, who came over from the Dodgers in November, in the other camp.

"They want to offer a long term contract like they did with Bonds and Zaidi does NOT want to," Smash Mouth reports. "Sabean/Baer step the F up, this is your team, not some slappy's from the Dodgers!"

You'll be surprised further to find a number of people making the same joke on Twitter, that Smash Mouth is indeed capable of identifying an All-Star.
